Leonard R. Foisy was born in Claremont, NH on September 9, 1930. Father Foisy was ordained a priest on June 15, 1957 by Bishop Matthew F. Brady, at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. He studied at St. Andrew Seminary, Rochester, NY, the Seminary of Philosophy, and the Grand Seminary, Montreal, P.Q., Canada, where he earned a S.T.B. and S.T.L. He attended the Sulpician Seminary of the Northwest and was a full member of the Society of St. Sulpice.
He attended the Theological College of Catholic University, Washington, DC and St. John's Provincial Seminary, Plymouth, MI. He earned a master's degree in theology from the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
The Sulpicians were founded in Paris in the mid 1660’s by Jean Jacques Olier to participate in seminary work. In 1791 they formed and staffed St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore Maryland. Father Foisy served as the rector of this seminary from 1977 to 1980.
In 1980 he returned to New Hampshire and was made pastor of St. Mary’s in Claremont. In June of 1982 he became chaplain of Notre Dame College and the Director of the Permanent Diaconate. On November 16, 1983 Father Foisy was named pastor of Ste. Marie Parish in addition to his diocesan work.
He transformed the sacristy into the Chapel of the North American Martyrs in 1984 and in 1986 started the Ste. Marie Child Care Center.
Father Foisy was granted a medical leave of absence in 1988 after which he was reassigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Manchester. Fr. Foisy died April 29, 2016. His funeral liturgy was celebrated by The Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci, Bishop of Manchester at Ste. Marie Church.
